What most of them do is give you a basic forum and then tell you to pay for more additions.

I like VP, but I find the admin panel too confusing. I like SMF, but right now they are between version one and two and so I am uneasy about which one to go with.

Go for SMF 2 because most everyone is changing over. I think they have a stable release for the public now.
