Exclamation HostV Adds Full Data Backup for Virtual Private Servers

To create a full backup, please follow the screenshot below. Note currently this full backup option is manual, we should have an automated option in the near future.

NEW YORK (October 22, 2008) – HostV (http://www.hostv.com), a leader in Virtual Private
Servers and Dedicated servers, announced today it has added an additional layer of data backup
for its Virtual Private Servers at no additional charge. All clients will automatically receive the
new functionality.

In addition to RAID-10 data protection, clients can now take advantage of complete data
backups that do not count against their disk space allotment. The full backup option allows
clients to periodically generate full backups of all data hosted on their Virtual Private Server. The
data is compressed and encrypted, and stored on a separate drive.

I had a chance to try this last night. Worked perfect. I started the backup and simply logged out. A few hours later, I checked on it and it was done. Very cool! Thanks!

Question Several Questions regarding this backup system

  1. How can I schedule backups to run at specific times in Virtuozzo?
  2. The press releases states that these backups are zipped, and downloadable, where can I download these from? I'm assuming SSH connection is required, but where is the system path so I can download them?
  3. Can I tell my WHM to run backups to this area? If so what is the system path?
    - This would allow me to renew just one account or something if an error goes wrong on their site, or specific DB, etc. With this system I have to restore my entire system, which could be nice although would be better fit if I can run backups through WHM that also are stored on a separate drive, so I can do the restoration process as described above (an individual domain hosted on my VPS, etc.) This is what I was told I could do when this service was released by HostV staff John via telephone.
  4. Why can Virtuozzo only have one backup at a time?

Hi,

1) Currently there is no scheduled backup option inside the Virtuozzo. We're hoping this will be implemented soon in the next update.

2) Any files you need from your server such as /home/user/public_html inside your backup, just let support know and we'll retrieve it for you and send it over. I'll look deeper into it but that is a good question.

3) The WHM/CPanel Backup option does not backup to your /vz/backup folder, it simply backs up to your current VPS so will use up your current storage. You can just disable whm/cpanel backup and use Virtuozzo for FULL BACKUPS and then if anything happens, you can easily restore the Virtuozzo Backup fully or have our staff do it.

4) That is the current limit so you can create daily or weekly backups and that is your choice. Best way is to create daily-weekly backups via VIRTUOZZO for Full Backup, and then also download mysql database backup from WHM etc..daily if you have important databases.

We'll keep doing our best to try and make this easier for everyone.

Cheers

Hello,

Please expand your statement: "Best way is to create daily-weekly backups via VIRTUOZZO for Full Backup"

For example, we had just made a full VIRTUOZZO backup of the vps. How do we apply your statement above?
