Default VPS Tips

Ok here are some links for you people new to virtuozzo/vps. Some maybe a little out of date, but they are all worth looking at. Take small steps if your not used to this kind of environment. VPS is pretty much a dedicated server but in a smaller setting. It's up to you to secure it, protect it, and anything or any client you put on there is your responsibility for the most part. So get the hang of things slowly. These are just a very small portion of my links. I have plenty of custom settings and other links if anyone is interested but review these for starters. Then Private message me or post here if you have any questions.

apf firewall:
http://www.rfxnetworks.com/apf.php
http://rfxnetworks.com/apf/README

apf basic install guide will need some alterations possibly:
http://www.eth0.us/apf

Dos-Deflate - ddos protection works in conjunction with apf firewall great, has some easy modifications that can be set.
http://deflate.medialayer.com/old/

Good script to check apache/http every 10mins and restart if it's down.
http://www.hostgeekz.com/guides/cPan...t%20Apache.htm

a really cool sort of auto installer for several useful scripts all in one package, such as apf firewall, bfd, zend optimizer, eAccelerator, optimize mysql tables, imagemagick, some secuirty and hardening. Definately worth checking out.
http://servermonkeys.com/els.php

Install RoundCube on cPanel:
http://www.hostgeekz.com/guides/cPan..._on_cPanel.htm

Also check hostgeekz for all kinds of other really good guides:
http://www.hostgeekz.com/guides.php

Usefull software ssh client putty:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html

Winscp:
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

Mailscanner alternative to spamassin consumes less resources:
http://configserver.com/free/mailscanner.html

ConfigServer Security & Firewall (csf) another alternative to apf/dosdeflate. It also comes highly recomended:
http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html

A good vps optimization guide, good section "Optimizing your VPS Server" mysql area. But the whole article has good tips:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=468168

To receive notifications when someone logs in as root on your server see this guide:
http://www.hostgeekz.com/guides/cPan...ot%20Login.htm

A very cool monitoring script that will allow you to monitor several aspects of your vps all in one screen:
http://www.labradordata.ca/home/13
*you will need to install a few easy third party scripts as described on the site, but all are pretty easy and will allow you to gather more stats/reports in your browser for your vps.

Lots of whm customization, backups, tweaks, addons/modules, php.ini etc etc can be done.

Once again a customer as opposed to HostV admins are posting actually valuable & informative information. Doesn't surprise me at all since the 24/7/365 support they claim to offer is really "the customer can do anything 24/7/365 for themselves, assuming HostV doesn't take the whole VPS down, let alone the whole node without prior notification.

The best HOW TO advice for this hosting is to go find your self a new one, since i dont know what is going on with thease. Running a hosting when they brought all customers VPS down, tring to get away with loosing our data, and acting like nothing is going on.
