Default How to get started with Unmanaged VPS ?

After reading the list of fine features on the HostV Feature page, and noting the Headline:
Every Hosting Account Include Pre-installed Software and Scripts ...
I was lucky enough to order one that Didn't have any ??? wtf ???
who else ? (guess you had to read the really fine print to dodge that bullet)

Anyway, I'm over it, but am still looking for some help getting started...

Like how to install any of those nice features.

Starting with an FTP service and how to set up users ?

Then if you had a need for a control panel or any of that stuff, how would you put it on yourself ?

I think package mgt is big on Linux now, so have to find out about it.
I'm a bit old school, coming from a Solaris background as well as WinXP.

Putty and/or WinSCP is great for getting shell access.
Is there any way to use a GUI Remote Desktop to work with this machine ?
This might require SSH, some security precautions and I think port forwarding on my local Router ? If this is possible links and references would be great.

Red5
How hard is it to install red5 on this CentOS Platform ?
I need to do this, so I def. will find out soon enough !
btw - Can red5 be installed on 64bit machines or does it require 32b ?

( it's great that the virtual machine has apache and php )
Noted the distro by going to /etc/issue

And to HostV admins, it would be nice if on the registration, you state that passwords should be alpha-numeric and not contain special characters.
( in many other situations a special char. is mandatory )

thanks in advance (TIA) for your replies, comments, suggestions, and input

The first sticky in the how-to section says how to automatically install Red5.

As for installing anything on CentOs I believe you use the "yum" (Yellowdog update, modified) command. I'm a Debian guy, so I am not that familiar with it. Just search the web for yum update. You can use any Redhat manuals as well because I believe the only difference is that the redhat name and logos are stripped out of the OS.

Sounds like you got a dev vps. All the features you were looking for are actually referring to the managed vps. The dev vps's are for those who are comfortable with command line and want the freedom to install everything themselves.
