Regular updates of your server's software? Maybe a firewall might give some extra protection too.

Ensure that 3 wrong password attempts bans the IP this stops brute force attempts, i don't know why this is not enabled by default.

It would , but it's also very effective method . You could always start it up when needed...

That is like taking out the extra security check only to enable it again. I think secure login is important.
