I don't just the power button and the UPS or power strip. Does it really matter?

Turning off the power supply isn't really necessary but it doesn't hurt to do that in case of a surge.

I have made it a practice of turning it off ever since I got a USB optical mouse that I noticed stayed on even though my computer was off.

That' because your computer generates limited power for network cards and some peripherals.

I recently put on a new USB mouse that ha a light on it. Even though I powered down the light still shows so only when I turned off power supply as it truly off.

Most people don't realize that turning off does not mean totally off unless you practically unplug the item.

Best thing to do is have all your devices hooked up to a strip and then when you're done for the day simply flip the switch.

Could you imagine if someone accidentally turned off the strip though? That would cause everything to shutdown in an instant.
