Can they be of any help to your computer at all? Someone told me they actually can cause more damage, is that true?

I don't think it can do worst but it can give you a false sense of safety. You need to get a UPS if you want safety.

That is true. I have been meaning to get another UPS but they are not a cheap as surge protectors .
